Hercules is the divine son of Jupiter, derived from the Greek Herakles. His name means “Glory of Hera”, a somewhat ironic name considering the troubles she put him through! He was a popular god with the Roman army, as a warrior hero, which is reflected in the eighteen inscriptions found to him across Britain.[347] A relief from Corbridge (Northumberland) shows him with Minerva, under whose protection he fought.

Twelve engraved gems from around Britain dating to 1st-3rd century CE show Hercules in a variety of poses. There are two busts, one with club and bow, two with club and lion skin, three wrestling the Nemean lion, one wrestling a giant, one subduing Cerberus, one wrestling Antaeus watched by Minerva, and one of him holding his club and urinating.[348]

Ptolemy’s third century CE work Geography refers to a place called Hercules Promontory, which equates to the modern location of Hartland Point in Devon.
